How to Evaluate AI Website Builders Before You Subscribe

Five-pillar pre-subscribe checklist for AI website builders: same brief→home+pricing, reversible edits, domain/CMS/forms/SEO, export/lock-in, and monthly credits—aimed at marketing sites, not app MVPs.

How to Evaluate AI Website Builders Before You Subscribe

How to Evaluate AI Website Builders Before You Subscribe

Buying an AI website builder because a homepage demo looked “designed” is how teams rent a pretty prison. Before you subscribe, run a pre-buy evaluation on a brief you actually need—marketing site, waitlist, or pricing page—not on the vendor’s best template.

This guide is a five-pillar checklist for marketing / landing websites. Primary examples: Framer, Webflow AI, and Canva AI. Adjacent builders—Bolt, Lovable, and v0—appear only to mark the boundary with prompt→app / MVP tools (see Bolt vs Lovable vs v0). Do not confuse those lanes.

Bottom line: Freeze one brief, generate home + pricing, then check reversible edits, domain/CMS/forms/SEO, export/lock-in, and monthly + credits + commercial terms. Prefer Framer/Webflow when the deliverable is a marketed site with CMS. Prefer Canva when design ops already live there. Prefer Bolt/Lovable/v0 when you need an interactive product shell—not a brochure site.

Findings: public docs + limited hands-on framing (verification 2026-11-05, Asia/Shanghai). Label gated AI credit meters as based on public information / limited hands-on.

Who this is for

  • Founders shipping a marketing site or waitlist without a full design team
  • Marketers evaluating Framer vs Webflow AI subscriptions
  • Designers already in Canva wondering if “AI site” is enough

Out of scope: native iOS apps, complex authenticated SaaS frontends (use the Bolt/Lovable/v0 article), and enterprise design-system governance deep-dives.

The five evaluation pillars

#PillarPass signal
1Same brief → home + pricingBoth pages exist, on-brand enough to edit—not a one-screen toy
2Reversible copy / layout editsYou can change headline, swap sections, undo AI without starting over
3Domain, CMS, forms, SEO basicsCustom domain path, form submissions, title/meta, sensible URLs
4Export / lock-inYou know what you keep if you cancel (code, CMS, domain)
5Monthly price + AI credits + commercial termsVolume of regenerations mapped to plan; license OK for client work

Pillar 1 — Same brief → home + pricing

Protocol: Freeze a 120-word brief. Example:

B2B analytics for mid-market ecommerce. Audience: heads of growth. Tone: calm, specific, no hype adjectives. Pages: Home (problem, product, social proof placeholders, CTA) and Pricing (three tiers with feature rows, annual toggle note, FAQ). Primary CTA: Start trial. Secondary: Book demo. Do not invent customer logos or metrics.

Generate once on Framer, Webflow AI, and Canva’s site/design AI path. Optionally generate the same brief on Bolt/Lovable/v0 only to see that you get app chrome instead of a marketed site.

Pass: Home + pricing both present; fake metrics are clearly placeholders you can delete.
Fail: Single hero with no pricing, or invented “trusted by 10,000 companies” claims you did not ask for.

Pillar 2 — Reversible copy and layout edits

Protocol: Change the H1, rewrite one pricing bullet, move a section, and regenerate only a hero image or one section if the tool allows scoped AI.

Pass: Edits stick; AI does not silently rewrite the whole sitemap. History / branching helps (Framer public marketing emphasizes branching/previews on higher plans).
Fail: Every tweak forces a full regen that burns credits and loses manual polish.

Webflow’s class-based system rewards structured edits; Framer’s canvas rewards visual moves; Canva rewards quick marketing iterations—pick the editing model your team already understands.

Pillar 3 — Domain, CMS, forms, SEO basics

Protocol: Checklist before you pay annual:

  1. Connect a custom domain without a surprise seat.
  2. Create one CMS collection (blog or customers) and bind a template page.
  3. Submit a test form to email or webhook.
  4. Set title, meta description, OG image, and a clean slug.
  5. Confirm HTTPS and a basic sitemap path.

Public shape reminders (confirm live): Framer site plans advertise Free → Basic ($10/mo yearly) → Pro ($30/mo yearly) with CMS collection limits scaling up. Webflow site plans advertise Starter Free → Basic ($15/mo yearly) → Premium ($25/mo yearly) with higher self-serve CMS ceilings on Premium. Canva site/design features follow Canva’s Pro/Business family—confirm which “website” features need Pro.

Pillar 4 — Export and lock-in

Protocol: Ask support docs, not sales chat:

  • Can you export clean HTML/CSS/JS, or only host on-platform?
  • Who owns the custom domain DNS if you cancel?
  • Do CMS records export as CSV/JSON?
  • Are AI-generated images licensed for ads after cancel?

Webflow historically markets stronger code export / developer platform depth; Framer markets design-led hosted sites with agent workflows; Canva optimizes for stay-in-Canva publishing. Bolt/Lovable/v0 may give you repo-like code—useful for apps, often the wrong abstraction for a content-marketed brochure unless you want to maintain hosting yourself.

Pass: You can state the exit plan in one paragraph.
Fail: “We will redesign later” with no export path.

Pillar 5 — Monthly price, AI credits, commercial terms

Protocol: Map your regen habit: (pages) × (expected AI iterations) ≤ monthly credits.

Public pricing / credit shape (snapshot 2026-11-05, Asia/Shanghai)

ToolPublic site/plan shapeAI meter (public)
FramerFree; Basic ~$10/mo yearly; Pro ~$30/mo yearly; Enterprise customFree often 500 one-time credits; Basic ~1,000/mo; Pro ~3,000/mo (confirm)—agents consume credits
Webflow AIStarter Free; Basic ~$15/mo yearly; Premium ~$25/mo yearlyAI included on site plans; workspace credit pools commonly discussed in hundreds/month by workspace tier—confirm live Workspace card
Canva AIFollow Canva Free vs Pro/BusinessBG remover / Magic features may require paid Canva—do not assume Free covers site AI
Bolt / Lovable / v0Separate app-builder metersEvaluate only if the brief is an app, not a marketing site

Commercial terms: confirm whether AI assets can run in paid ads and client deliverables. Do not hardcode directory listing prices here—link builders to your own submit flow when relevant.

Decision tree

  1. Need a marketed site with CMS → Framer or Webflow AI (run Pillars 1–5).
  2. Need quick creative pages inside an existing Canva workflow → Canva AI first.
  3. Need interactive product MVP → stop; use the Bolt vs Lovable vs v0 comparison instead.
  4. Still unsure → generate the frozen brief on two tools only; the third is usually noise.

Method notes

  • No fabricated traffic or conversion stats.
  • Pricing/credits dated 2026-11-05, Asia/Shanghai from Framer / Webflow public pages; re-open before checkout.
  • Keep AI website builders and AI app builders in separate eval docs.
