PRODUCT OVERVIEW

What is Connected Papers?

Connected Papers is a visual research tool for researchers and applied scientists who need to find and explore papers relevant to their field. Enter a paper identifier such as a DOI, arXiv, Semantic Scholar or PubMed URL, or a title, and it builds a graph of similar papers drawn from the Semantic Scholar corpus. Papers are arranged by similarity based on co-citation and bibliographic coupling, so related works cluster together even without direct citations. Prior Works and Derivative Works views help locate ancestor studies, literature reviews and newer state-of-the-art papers. Use it to get an overview of a new field, check for missed important papers, or fill gaps in a thesis bibliography. A free tier includes all features with 5 graphs per month; Academic and Business plans unlock unlimited graphs.

How to use Connected Papers

  1. 1

    Enter a paper identifier

On the home page, enter a paper DOI, arXiv, Semantic Scholar or PubMed URL, or a paper title, then build the graph.

  2. 2

    Explore the similarity graph

Review the force-directed graph where papers are positioned by similarity; select nodes to see the shortest path to the origin paper.

  3. 3

    Check prior and derivative works

Use the Prior Works view to find ancestor works and the Derivative Works view to find literature reviews and newer papers that followed your input.

  4. 4

    Save and revisit graphs

Save papers and keep graph history so you can return to earlier explorations.
