How to Evaluate AI Presentation Tools Before You Subscribe
A pre-subscribe checklist for AI slide tools: run one real brief from outline to 10 editable slides to PPTX export, then score input paths, brand lock, export/collab, edit control, and seat math—before you pay annual.

Pretty demo decks sell annual plans. They do not tell you whether your outline survives free-tier or trial limits, whether brand fonts lock, or whether the file can leave the generator and enter the PowerPoint workflow you already ship.
This guide is a pre-subscribe evaluation framework—not a Best-of ranking. Use the checklist on any candidate, including directory tools such as Gamma, Beautiful.ai, Plus AI, Copilot in PowerPoint, AiPPT, and design-adjacent helpers like Canva AI. When the pricing meter gets murky, cross-read Pricing Pages Decoded: Freemium vs Credit Packs. The sibling method for images is How to Evaluate AI Image Tools Before You Subscribe.
Bottom line: Run one real brief through outline → ~10 deliverable slides → PPTX (or native PowerPoint) export on free/trial before you buy annual. Teams that already live in PowerPoint should trial Copilot in PowerPoint and/or Plus AI first. Teams that need blank-page narrative speed should trial a Gamma-class generator (and still demand a clean PPTX path). Do not upgrade because a homepage carousel looks sharp.

Why sample decks mislead
| What galleries show | What your job needs |
|---|---|
| Curated 8-slide stories | Your facts, constraints, and ugly tables |
| Default “wow” themes | Locked fonts, colors, and logo placement |
| One-click magic | Block-level edits without regenerating the whole deck |
| Unlimited-feeling demos | Real credit/seat caps for 8–12 external decks/month |
| In-app share links only | PPTX/PDF that opens in your client’s PowerPoint |
Treat every marketing deck as non-transferable evidence. Your trial run on a frozen brief is the only transferable evidence.
The five decision pillars
Score each 1–5 after one shared free/trial run. A tool can win on first-draft beauty and still fail on brand lock or export.
1) Input paths
Can you start from an outline, a URL, a PDF/DOCX, or a one-line prompt—and still get an editable deck (not a flat image collage)?
2) Brand lock
Theme, font stack, palette, logo, footers: can you lock them so the next regenerate does not invent a new visual system?
3) Export and collaboration
PPTX and PDF quality; comments; version history; whether the file fits an existing PowerPoint / Google Slides review loop.
4) Edit control
Full-deck regenerate vs single-slide / single-block rewrite. You need the latter for client revisions.
5) Pricing seats vs credits
Model 8–12 external decks/month (retries included). Name the meter: seat, credits, or Microsoft 365 bundle. Pair with Pricing Pages Decoded.
Five acceptance points (run these in order)
Use this as a printable gate. Attempt all five before Upgrade.
Point A — Freeze one real brief
Pick a deck you would actually send. Example (adapt freely):
Internal product update for a 10-person customer success team. Audience already knows the product. Need: title, problem (3 bullets), what shipped (table of 4 features), rollout timeline (6 weeks), risks + owners, appendix FAQ. Tone: plain, no hype. Brand: navy + gray, Inter/Arial only, logo top-right, no stock-photo heroes.
Save the outline in a note. Do not “improve” it mid-test.
Point B — Same brief on free/trial, two input paths
- Paste the outline / one-shot prompt.
- If the product allows, also try PDF or URL import (or Plus AI’s document upload on eligible plans).
Log: slides produced, minutes to first editable draft, whether structure matched your sections.
Point C — Brand lock + one hostile edit
Apply theme/brand kit. Then change only the timeline slide (dates + owners). If the tool forces a full regenerate that breaks other slides, score edit control low.
Point D — Export into the real workflow
Export PPTX (and PDF if you ship PDFs). Open in desktop PowerPoint or Google Slides. Check: fonts substituted? logos rasterized badly? speaker notes intact? animations exploded?
If your org standard is PowerPoint, prefer tools that generate inside PowerPoint (Plus AI, Copilot in PowerPoint) or prove round-trip PPTX quality.
Point E — Meter the month
Count generations + regenerations you would actually need for 8–12 external decks. Map that onto seats and credits. If the math is unclear on the pricing page, do not annualize yet.
How example tools map to the framework
These are illustrations, not a ranked shortlist. Re-run Points A–E yourself.
Gamma — generator-first narrative speed
Evaluate when: You need a first draft deck/doc/site from a prompt or import faster than opening a blank PPTX.
Pillars to stress-test: Input (prompt / import PDF & PPTX per public positioning), brand (custom branding deepens on higher plans), export (PDF, PPTX, PNG, Google Slides called out on Free+), edit control (card/agent edits spend credits), pricing (monthly credits + per-seat plans).
Public pricing notes (verify on gamma.app/pricing): Help center describes Free (credits do not refresh; create up to 10 slides per prompt), Plus (1,500 monthly credits; branding removal), Pro (4,000 credits; custom branding/analytics/API), Ultra (20,000 credits; most advanced models). USD seat prices are shown in the live pricing UI (JS-rendered; our 2026-11-01 fetch did not reliably extract dollar nodes)—recent public reads of that same page commonly list Plus/Pro/Ultra around $12 / $25 / $100 monthly or lower effective rates on annual ($9 / $18 / $90 per month billed annually). Confirm the live toggle before purchase. Credit packs (help: from ~$6 / 1,500 credits) matter if you regenerate heavily.

Beautiful.ai — Smart Slides + brand guardrails
Evaluate when: You want design constraints (Smart Slides) more than a raw chat canvas.
Pillars: Brand theme builder; PowerPoint import/export called out publicly; Team collaboration/version/locked slides; AI content generation positioned as unlimited on Pro/Team marketing copy—still test edit granularity.
Public pricing (beautiful.ai/pricing, 2026-11-01): Pro ~$14.50/mo billed annually (individual); Team $40/user/mo billed annually or $50 monthly (2–20 users; fixed pricing language for up to three users appears on-page—read carefully). 14-day free trial (card required per FAQ). Enterprise custom.

Plus AI — native Google Slides + PowerPoint add-in
Evaluate when: The deliverable must remain a normal .pptx / Google Slides file your stakeholders already know how to comment on.
Pillars: Input (prompt; document upload on Pro+); brand (Team plan: logo/colors/fonts, shared presets); edit (insert single slides, rewrite/remix); pricing is per-user seats + monthly AI credits.
Public pricing (plusai.com/pricing, 2026-11-01): 7-day trial with 1,000 credits (card required; new customers). Annual billing: Basic $10, Pro $20, Team $30, Max $200 per user/month (monthly: $15 / $25 / $40 / $240). Credits: 1,500 / 3,000 / 6,000 / unlimited; vendor notes typical tasks ~40–170 credits.

Copilot in PowerPoint — Microsoft 365-native
Evaluate when: Your company already pays for Microsoft 365 and the political cost of a new slide SaaS is high.
Pillars: Input from prompts/docs inside PowerPoint; brand via existing slide master / corporate templates; collab via familiar OneDrive/SharePoint; edit control inherits PowerPoint. Pricing is usually a Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on seat (enterprise list pricing varies by agreement—do not guess a consumer sticker from memory; check your admin center / Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing pages for your SKU).

Also on the shortlist when relevant
- AiPPT — run the same A–E gate; confirm PPTX export and language fit for your market.
- Canva AI — strong when the “deck” is really a design-file publish path; weaker if clients demand strict PowerPoint masters. Score workflow fit honestly.
Decision tree (stop at the first firm “no”)
1. Did free/trial finish outline → ~10 editable slides → openable PPTX/native file?
├─ No → Do not subscribe yet.
└─ Yes → go to 2.
2. Can you lock brand (fonts/colors/logo) across a regenerate?
├─ No → Prefer Team/brand tiers or PowerPoint-native tools; pretty drafts do not fix this.
└─ Yes → go to 3.
3. Can you change one slide/block without wrecking the deck?
├─ No → Rank edit control above first-draft beauty.
└─ Yes → go to 4.
4. Model 8–12 decks/month including retries on the real meter (seat and/or credits).
├─ Math unclear or spikes kill the pool → Prefer clearer seats (Plus AI / Beautiful.ai / M365 Copilot) or buy packs knowingly.
└─ Steady → Subscribe for one billing cycle with a cancel/renew reminder.
Quick picks by need (still run A–E)
| Need | Lean toward | Still verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fast narrative from a blank page | Gamma-class generator | PPTX round-trip + credit burn |
| Design guardrails + themes | Beautiful.ai | Trial→annual price; Team seat math |
| Stay inside PowerPoint / Google Slides | Plus AI or Copilot in PowerPoint | Credits (Plus) or M365 Copilot SKU |
| Design-to-social in one canvas | Canva AI | Whether clients accept Canva export vs PPTX masters |
Worked cost sketch (8–12 decks/month)
Illustrative only—recompute on live pages.
| Path | Public entry shape (2026-11-01 notes) | Fits 8–12 decks if… |
|---|---|---|
| Plus AI Basic/Pro annual | $10–$20/user/mo + 1.5k–3k credits | Your agent tasks stay within credit guidance (~40–170 each); Pro if you upload PDFs |
| Beautiful.ai Pro annual | ~$14.50/mo individual | Unlimited AI generation marketing holds for your usage; export PPTX passes review |
| Gamma Plus/Pro | Credit + seat (confirm USD on site) | Retries do not exhaust monthly credits; export accepted by clients |
| Copilot in PowerPoint | M365 Copilot add-on (org price) | You already have compliant templates and admin approval |
Annual discounts are real on several vendors—but annual before a passing A–E run is how teams buy shelfware.
Common traps
- Paying for the gallery — Demo decks used different prompts, human polish, or premium models.
- Ignoring export — A gorgeous in-app share link that breaks in client PowerPoint fails the job.
- Full-deck regenerate addiction — Client feedback is local; your tool must be local too.
- Seat ≠ generation pool — Especially on credit meters (Gamma, Plus AI agent).
- Double stack — Gamma for drafts and Plus AI and Canva without a handoff rule burns money.
- Brand theater — A logo stamp is not a locked master; check fonts after PPTX open.
- Trial card surprise — Beautiful.ai and Plus AI trials call out cards and auto-charge—calendar the cancel date.
Closing action (one sitting)
- Choose one presentation tool you are about to pay for.
- Paste acceptance points A–E into a note.
- Run the frozen brief twice (prompt path + import path if available).
- Open the PPTX in your real review app; score brand lock and one-slide edit.
- Only then click Upgrade—and set a renewal reminder.
Heavy PowerPoint orgs: trial Copilot and/or Plus AI before a net-new generator. Blank-page speed: trial Gamma-class, but keep the PPTX gate. Everyone else: one brief, one sitting, then decide.
