Pricing Pages Decoded: Freemium vs Credit Packs for AI Tools

A reusable checklist for reading AI pricing pages—freemium gates, credit packs, seats vs usage—with public examples from Gamma, Jimeng, Canva AI, ChatGPT, and DeepSeek.

Pricing Pages Decoded: Freemium vs Credit Packs for AI Tools

AI pricing pages look friendly until you try to finish one real task. Then you discover the free tier ends mid-export, “unlimited” means fair-use, credits expire on the billing date, or the API balance you topped up does not work in the web app.

This guide is a reusable framework for reading those pages—not a product review and not a discount roundup. We walk a checklist, decode four public examples on AINav (Gamma, Jimeng, Canva AI, plus ChatGPT / DeepSeek), then give a simple decision tree. Related assistants on the directory—Claude, Poe, Qwen—follow the same reading habits even when their meters differ.

Bottom line: Treat every pricing page as a contract sketch. Ask whether free can finish one full job, whether you are buying feature gates or quantity gates, and whether credits, seats, and API balances are interchangeable. Figures below are public-page snapshots (Oct 2026)—no invented MAU or promo codes. Pair this with How to Choose an AI Assistant with Repeatable Tests and Reading AI Product Updates Before Switching.

Three meters you will see again and again

MeterWhat it usually meansTypical failure mode
Freemium / seat planPay for access (models, export, team). Usage may still be capped. You unlock the UI but still hit a daily/monthly ceiling
Credit pack / usage poolEach generation spends units (credits, minutes, tokens)Retries burn the month; rollover rules surprise you
Seat vs usage hybridPer-person subscription plus shared or per-seat creditsTeam invites raise seats; heavy users still need top-ups

Most modern AI tools mix at least two of these. Your job on the pricing page is to name which meter actually bills the work you do.

Pricing-page checklist (print this)

Run these questions before you click Upgrade. Aim for yes/no answers you can paste into a note.

A. Can free (or trial) finish one full task?

  • I can complete one end-to-end job (export included), not only a preview.
  • Watermark / resolution / commercial license limits are explicit for free outputs.
  • Trial length and “what happens on day N+1” are written, not only “Start free.”

B. What exactly am I buying?

  • Feature gates (remove watermark, 4K, team SSO, custom GPT, brand kit).
  • Quantity gates (N credits, N media hours, N messages, N seats).
  • Both—and I know which one will fail first for my workload.

C. Credits & allowances

  • Cost per action is shown before generate (or documented per model/second/slide).
  • Monthly plan credits refresh date is clear (billing anniversary ≠ calendar 1st).
  • Rollover rules: none / one cycle / up to N× plan size / purchased never expire.
  • Purchased packs vs subscription credits are separate buckets (and which spends first).

D. Seats, teams, cancellation

  • Price is per seat or workspace; adding people does / does not multiply credits.
  • Cancel keeps access until period end (or cuts immediately)—written in FAQ.
  • Downgrade path: unused credits expire, convert, or vanish.

E. API vs consumer

  • API keys / developer console use a different balance than the creative web app.
  • I will not assume a ChatGPT seat buys OpenAI API tokens (or vice versa).
  • Regional SKUs (USD vs CNY pages) are not assumed 1:1.

If you cannot check most of A–C from the public page, treat the upgrade as unverified until support docs or in-account billing fill the gaps.

Worked examples (public pages only)

Verification label for all examples: 2026-10-29 (Asia/Shanghai). Prices move; open the live page before you pay.

1) Gamma — freemium seat + monthly credits (with rollover cap)

Gamma sells AI presentation / page generation. Public help (How do credits work in Gamma?) states:

  • Free: starting credits (help cites 400 on signup); Free credits do not refresh; referrals can earn more with a per-user cap.
  • Paid: monthly plan credits refresh on the billing date; unused plan credits roll over up to 2× the plan size (example in help: Plus with 1,500 → hold up to 3,000).
  • Spend order: plan credits → purchased credits → workspace credits (Business/Enterprise).
  • Failed AI actions are not charged; successful-but-imperfect generations are.

Public pricing cards list Plus / Pro / Ultra with rising monthly credits (2026 roundups often cite ~$9 / ~$18 / ~$90 per seat monthly—confirm on gamma.app/pricing).

Checklist lesson: seat + credit hybrid with an explicit rollover cap (helpful for spiky months—until you hit 2×).

2) Jimeng — membership unlock + credit spend (regional)

Jimeng (即梦) is a creative suite where membership and credits both matter: membership unlocks capability tiers; generations still consume credits. Public product surfaces (jimeng.jianying.com and related policy pages) describe subscription credits issued on a cycle, daily free credits that clear the same day, and separately purchased credits with their own validity.

Consumer plan cards (Oct 2026) show Basic / Standard / Advanced-style memberships with monthly credit grants; CNY prices and promos change—use checkout, not a blog “forever price.”

Checklist lesson: “Member” may unlock features and still require enough credits—ask both questions.

3) Canva AI — classic freemium design seat + shared AI allowance (+ optional pack)

Canva AI sits inside Canva’s Free / Pro / Business freemium ladder. Public AI Pass docs (canva.com/ai-pass) explain:

  • Pro / Business already include a shared monthly AI allowance across Standard / Premium / Ultra AI tools (mix of tools changes how fast the pool drains).
  • AI Pass is an optional recurring add-on that multiplies AI allowance (Canva states up to ~40× Pro / ~20× Business—marketing multiples, not a promise of infinite gens).
  • You do not need AI Pass merely to touch AI features; you need it when the included pool is the bottleneck.
  • Annual Pro subscribers still see AI allowance reset on a monthly cadence tied to billing.

Pro’s cash price is regional—verify on canva.com/pricing.

Checklist lesson: freemium gates design assets + AI pool size; AI Pass behaves like a usage booster on top of a seat.

4) ChatGPT vs DeepSeek — seat freemium vs free chat + metered API

ChatGPT (chatgpt.com/pricing) is seat freemium: Free, Go, Plus, Pro gate models and limits. Public materials commonly cite Go ~$8/mo (US) and Plus ~$20/mo; Pro starts much higher (about $100/mo tiers). Live cards win—names and amounts change. A Plus seat is not OpenAI API prepaid credit.

DeepSeek offers free consumer chat while API is pay-per-token (api-docs.deepseek.com). Rates differ by model and cache hit/miss—chat free ≠ API free.

Checklist lesson: “Free” can mean soft seat limits or hard token invoices. Same habit for Claude, Poe, Qwen.

Decision tree: freemium vs credit pack vs seat subscription

Use this in order. Stop at the first firm match.

1. Do you need the tool daily for the same job (writing, design, chat)?
   ├─ No → Prefer Free / small credit pack / pay-as-you-go API.
   └─ Yes → go to 2.

2. Is your usage spiky (big launches) or steady?
├─ Spiky → Credit packs or top-ups beat large seats you forget to cancel.
└─ Steady → Seat subscription; confirm included allowance covers a normal week.

3. Do you mostly unlock features (export, team, model access)
or burn generations (video seconds, images, long agent runs)?
├─ Features → Freemium / seat upgrade first.
└─ Generations → Model the credit math (retries × cost) before the logo upgrade.

4. Is more than one human creating?
├─ Yes → Seat price × people + whether credits are shared or per seat.
└─ No → Ignore team SKUs; watch personal rollover and cancel rules.

5. Will you automate via API later?
└─ Budget a separate API line. Never assume consumer credits move over.

Common traps (steal these for your review notes)

  1. Hidden export limits — Free finishes the edit but watermarks, caps resolution, or blocks commercial use. Always find the export row in the comparison table.
  2. Team seat upsells — Headline “$X/mo” is per editor; guests, proofreaders, or “learner seats” appear as add-ons (Synthesia-style learner seats are a vivid case in video tools).
  3. API ≠ consumer credits — Pika’s public pricing even states some top-ups work only on Create/MCP, not API/iOS/legacy. Assume non-interchangeable until docs say otherwise.
  4. Rollover theater — “Credits roll over” may mean one month, 2× cap, or only purchased packs. Screenshot the FAQ the day you subscribe.
  5. Promo first month — Synthesia-style “$9 first month then $19” is not your year-two price. Model the renewal rate.
  6. Regional forks — Jimeng CNY memberships and global USD SaaS pages are different products for budgeting purposes.
  7. Success still costs — Gamma help is blunt: if the model finishes, you pay credits even when you dislike the slide. Plan retries into the monthly math.

Closing action (do this once before you upgrade)

  1. Pick one tool you are about to pay for.
  2. Paste the A–E checklist into a note.
  3. Open the official pricing + credit FAQ side by side.
  4. Run one full task on free/trial, including export.
  5. Only then choose freemium seat, credit pack, or hybrid—and set a calendar reminder for the renewal date.

If the vendor cannot answer rollover, export, or API separation from public docs, wait. Switching costs more than one more week on Free.
