How to Evaluate AI Browser Assistants Before You Switch Default Search

Pre-switch checklist for AI browser sidebars and default-search assistants: freeze four queries, test citations and reversibility for one parallel week, and only then change the OS default—Comet/Perplexity-shaped paths for cited research, Brave Leo for privacy-first ask, Opera AI for tab context; do not plan a new default around retired ChatGPT Atlas.

How to Evaluate AI Browser Assistants Before You Switch Default Search

Switching your default search—or your whole default browser—after one shiny AI demo is how people lock in hallucinated shopping answers, broken extensions, and cloud chats they never meant to train. The cost is lost muscle memory plus a week of “where did Google go?” friction.

This is a pre-switch evaluation guide, not a “best AI browser” ranking. It stays off AINav’s bake-off Perplexity vs You.com vs ChatGPT for AI Search, which compares web AI search products. Here the job is different: judge browser sidebars / AI browsers / default-search assistants with one frozen query pack before you change the system default.

Examples (directory pointers, not a scoreboard): Comet, Dia, Brave Leo, Opera AI, plus seats you may already hold—Perplexity, ChatGPT, Brave Search AI. ChatGPT Atlas is still listed on AINav; OpenAI’s Help Center states the standalone Atlas browser has been retired—export bookmarks if you used it, and evaluate current ChatGPT desktop/browsing paths instead of planning a new OS default around Atlas.

Bottom line: Freeze four queries + one long page → run the five pillars in a secondary profile for one parallel week → change default search/browser only if reverse-to-Google/Bing is one click and citations hold. Split by need: cited everyday research → Comet / Perplexity-shaped paths; privacy-first in-browser ask → Brave Leo; tab-context free sidebar → Opera AI; work synthesis across connected tools → Dia (verify SSO/admin claims on public pages). Do not switch default on day one.

Findings: public docs + limited hands-on framing (verification 2026-11-05, Asia/Shanghai). Re-open vendor pricing and privacy pages before you pay. No invented MAU, accuracy %, or locked dollar prices.

Who this is for / Out of scope

For: anyone tempted to make an AI browser the OS default; privacy-sensitive Leo evaluators; people who already pay for ChatGPT or Perplexity and wonder if a browser skin saves money.

Out of scope: enterprise Drive/Wiki/Slack knowledge search, coding agents, and “top 10 AI browsers” listicles.

The five evaluation pillars

#PillarPass looks likeFail looks like
1Same four queriesOpenable citations; honest refuse on trapsConfident wrong facts; fake local hours
2Sidebar / page summaryMatches the page; jump-back to sourceInvented paragraphs; unauditable cites
3Default-search reversibility≤3-click restore; extensions surviveStuck default; sync/extension breakage
4Login & data boundaryClear training/retention; work profile isolationForced cloud memory you cannot disable for eval
5Public limits & seatsFree vs paid mapped from live pagesGuessed seat math; “unlimited” taken literally

Pillar 1 — Same four queries

In a fresh profile, ask the identical four prompts in each assistant:

  1. Hard fact — dated, checkable claim.
  2. Local / timely — hours or event info that can go stale.
  3. Comparison shopping — two named SKUs; demand links.
  4. Hallucination trap — made-up feature or fake “Pro Ultra” SKU.

Pass: sources open to the claim; traps get refusal / not-found—not a fabricated spec. Fail: smooth prose with dead cites or a shopping winner you cannot verify.

Comet leans Perplexity-style answer+cite browsing (agent/page actions may be plan-gated—limited hands-on). Brave Leo pairs with Brave Search grounding. Opera AI and Dia stress page/tab context. Re-run the pack yourself.

Pillar 2 — Sidebar / page summary

Open the same long public article. Ask for five bullets plus one quoted sentence with location, then a detail that appears once deep in the page.

Pass: structure matches; quote exists; you can jump back. Fail: phantom sections or cites that open the site homepage.

Treat agentic clicks (forms, checkout, inbox) as a separate risk class. Keep finance/email tabs out of the eval profile until you understand supervision UX (public security reporting / limited hands-on).

Pillar 3 — Default-search reversibility

Before any OS default change: note current search + browser; enable the assistant in a non-default profile; confirm Google/Bing restore in ≤3 clicks; import bookmarks first; smoke-test must-have extensions (password manager, ad block, clippers).

Pass: omnibox AI is optional; classic results one toggle away. Fail: hijacked default with no clear revert. Staying inside Brave or Opera often makes revert cheaper than adopting a new browser binary; Comet’s public help describes Chromium + Chrome-extension support—still verify your extensions.

Pillar 4 — Login & data

Read privacy / data-controls before signing into personal Gmail or work IdP. Can you state in one sentence where today’s chat goes?

Public shapes to re-check live: Brave Leo pages state chats are not retained for additional model training and free Leo needs no account; Premium unlocks models/limits via Brave Premium. Dia markets tracker blocking and user controls over memory/sharing. Comet/Perplexity and ChatGPT inherit their account privacy centers. Opera AI advertises accountless free access—still read Opera’s privacy policy.

Pillar 5 — Public limits & seats

Indicative only: Brave lists Leo AI Premium on brave.com/premium (stickers move—screenshot today’s card). Perplexity documents Comet and plan-gated browser-agent usage in help/plan materials—open the live table. Do not hardcode vendor dollars into your decision memo.

Decision tree

  1. Pillar 3 or 4 fails → stop; keep classic search as default.
  2. Need cited web answers → Comet / Perplexity-shaped flows (classic engine still one click away).
  3. Need privacy-first ask → Brave Leo (+ optional Brave Search AI).
  4. Need tab context without a new browser → Opera AI (or stay put + separate assistant).
  5. Need work synthesis across apps → Dia connectors/admin on public pages before fleet default.
  6. Only after a parallel week → flip default search; re-check revert on day 8.

One-week checklist

Day 0: secondary profile; log four queries + one page summary. Days 1–3: real browsing, no OS default change. Day 4: trap + shopping comparison with screenshots. Day 5: toggle default inside the profile; confirm reverse. Day 6: extensions + password manager. Day 7: re-read privacy/training; decide keep / drop / pay. Day 8+: OS default only if 0–7 passed.

FAQ

Replace Google/Bing entirely? Usually no—keep AI as a parallel layer until pillar 1 stays green for a week.

Same as Perplexity/ChatGPT search? No. Browser assistants add page context, defaults, and sometimes agents. Product search bake-offs live in the AI search comparison.

ChatGPT Atlas? Retired as a standalone browser per OpenAI Help. Use /tool/chatgpt-atlas as a directory pointer only.
